Minecraft runs most of its game loop on a single thread. A 32-core processor at 2.8 GHz will do worse than a 12-core at 5.4 GHz. That is why we fit our blades with AMD Ryzen 9 7900 rather than previous-generation EPYC.

A network that does not
go around the world
Our blades are connected over 10 Gb/s fiber in a Paris facility. For a player in France, that means less than ten milliseconds between the click and the action on the server. It is the difference between a block that breaks instantly and a block that comes back.
At Iliad,
the group behind Free
Our blades are installed in a room of the Iliad group, in the Paris region. Not a host reselling rack space: the operator itself.
The difference does not show on a spec sheet, it shows in the game. Iliad runs its own network and its own rooms. A server sitting on it talks to French players over that network, not over transit bought from a third party. The route stays short, and it stays in France.
- An operator's network, not resold bandwidth. At most hosts, traffic leaves the room through a transit provider; the route to a French player can leave the country and come back.
- Interconnections with the other French operators. A long-established operator is present at the national exchange points: the packet moves from one network to the other on the spot, without a detour.
- A network sized for the evenings. It primarily carries consumer subscribers, so it is sized for the 9 pm peak. Which is exactly when your server is full.
- Your data stays in France. French room, French operator, French law. No cascading subcontractors that nobody can trace to the end.
This spot cannot be bought retail: it comes from fourteen years of operations and from a volume that opened the operator's door to us. That is what lets us announce a latency without an asterisk.
