Minecraft Java
or Bedrock?

Two editions, different platforms, and a bridge to bring them together. What to know before choosing, and how to open one server to consoles and PC alike.

Java or Bedrock?

Java is the original edition, on PC only. It has the largest ecosystem of mods and plugins.

Bedrock covers Windows, iOS, Android, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. It is the edition to choose if your players are on console or mobile. It uses add-ons rather than mods.

Bringing both editions together

A bridge like Geyser, combined with Floodgate, lets Bedrock players join a Java server. It is the most flexible setup: you keep the Java plugin ecosystem while opening the door to consoles.

Both components install from the plugin manager, on a Paper or Spigot base.

Connecting from a console

On Windows and mobile, adding an external server is native. On Xbox, PlayStation and Switch, Mojang restricts the server list: you have to go through a DNS redirection app, or change the console's network settings.

Sizing

Bedrock is lighter than Java for the same player count: the engine is written in C++ and manages memory better. Count 2 GB for about ten players, 4 GB as soon as you add add-ons or a Geyser bridge.
